nbc bay area's christie smith is live outside that courthouse in richmond with more. christie, what happened? >> reporter: good morning. this was a very brief court appearance for darnell washington. maybe lasted less than two minutes. he didn't speak or look at the row of cameras inside the courtroom facing him. the 24-year-old is accused of killing retired hercules schoolteacher susie ko. washington's attorney, the public defender, accepted the case but they did not enter a plea today. there are nine counts against him including murder, robbery and carjacking. part of a crime spree that started in southern california with his wife, tania washington, and allegedly included a jail break and wounding a deputy. prosecutors say on october 5th, they killed ko at her home. on the same day, they robbed a k-mart in sunol. they allegedly stole ko's car. ended up in washington state where they led police on a chase. we tried to speak with the public defender this morning who declined. but prosecutors say that the couple had no tie to hercules. if convicted, they could face lif
